“GROOVING HIGH”

Classic Jazz Repertoire of the ’50s and ’60s

THEATRE OF THE NO
Friday, October 2

Dimitris Kalantzis 4tet presents a special evening of jazz on Friday, October 2, at
21:30 at THEATRE OF THE NO, under the title “Grooving High.” Acclaimed pianist
Dimitris Kalantzis and his three collaborators present a programme featuring the
classic jazz repertoire of the 1950s and ’60s.
Joining him are George Georgiadis on bass, Panagiotis Themas on drums and Takis
Paterelis on saxophone. Three musicians from different generations, united by their
passion for jazz.
Drawing on one of the most creative and diverse periods in jazz history, the quartet
combines respect for tradition with freedom of interpretation, creating space for
improvisation, spontaneity and live musical interaction.
Dimitris Kalantzis is one of the established figures of the Greek jazz scene, with an
extensive career as a pianist, composer and arranger. Having studied in Greece and
Hungary, he has collaborated with leading musicians from the Greek and international
jazz scenes, including Kevin Mahogany, Alex Foster, Abram Wilson, Rex
Richardson, Ralph Peterson and Andy Sheppard.
He taught at the Ionian University from 2004 to 2010 and again from 2013 to the
present. He is also the founder and director of the Jazz Department of the Athens
Conservatoire.
His discography includes, among others, “Mano’s – A Jazz Tribute to Manos
Hadjidakis,” which achieved platinum status, as well as “Modes & Moods – Music by
Mikis Theodorakis,” “Χθες το βράδυ – Μια jazz ματιά στο χθες της ελληνικής
μουσικής” and “Master’s Voice – Vassilis Tsitsanis.” Through these projects, he
explores Greek musical repertoire through the language of jazz.
